Consider a 100-room hotel.

If every room has an electronic keycard lock, the hotel doesn't have one electronic lock to maintain. It has 100.

Some rooms will naturally use their locks more frequently than others. A high-turnover room may have guests checking in and out regularly, while another room might remain vacant for days.

That means battery performance won't necessarily be identical across the property.

  • An energy management system can know whether the room should be powered.

When these systems remain completely separate, hotel staff have to connect the information manually.

When they are integrated, the hotel can start turning operational events into automated actions.

For example, occupancy information from compatible keycard infrastructure can be used alongside hotel automation systems to manage room-level energy consumption. A room occupied by a guest can operate normally, while a vacant room can move into an energy-saving state.

This doesn't eliminate the need to maintain the locks.

It does, however, make the information generated by the locks more useful.


What Hotels Should Actually Be Looking For

The answer isn't to abandon keycard locks.

They remain a practical access-control technology for hotels.

The better approach is to treat them as one component of a larger hotel technology system.

A hotel should know:

  • Which rooms have low-battery warnings
  • Which locks require maintenance
  • Which rooms are occupied
  • Which rooms have checked out
  • Which rooms are ready for the next guest
  • How room occupancy relates to energy consumption

The more of this information that can be connected, the less the hotel has to rely on staff discovering problems manually.


The Bigger Lesson

Keycard systems solved the problem of physical room keys.

But they introduced a new operational requirement: maintaining hundreds of small electronic devices across a property.

Battery replacement is manageable when it is planned. Lock failures become expensive when they are discovered by guests.

For Nigerian hotels in particular, where access to specialized technical support can vary by location, proactive monitoring and integration with the wider hotel technology stack can make a meaningful difference.

The future of hotel automation isn't about installing more disconnected devices.

It's about making the devices a hotel already has work together.
